What do a civil rights law professor, legendary LA sports fan, jazz lover, and 5AM personal training client have in common?
Meet Professor Gary C. Williams — my longtime client, friend, and “Sensei” 😂 who has somehow made me the student in plenty of life lessons.
Gary spent decades as a professor of law, civil rights advocate, ACLU attorney, father, grandfather, and mentor to generations of students. After recently retiring from Loyola Law School, he invited me to his retirement reception, where I got to celebrate an incredible career alongside the people whose lives he’s impacted.
In this conversation, we talk about his journey through law and civil rights, his love of the Dodgers and the childhood games his grandmother took him to, the scorecards she kept, his love of jazz, family, fatherhood, grandfatherhood, retirement, and what it means to build a life of purpose and service.
We also talk about our own journey — more than two years of early-morning training, getting stronger, pushing through the workouts that feel like torture 😂, and the unexpected friendship that grew along the way.
Gary has supported my journey too, including cheering on my brother Arnold and me as we made our award-winning short film, Something Good Going On.
This is a conversation about legacy, friendship, family, movement, and continuing to grow in every chapter of life.
What will people remember about the way you showed up for them?
